SUMMARY:Fresco Workshop with Barbara Sullivan @ Waterfall Arts
DESCRIPTION:FRESCO WORKSHOP WITH BARBARA SULLIVAN\n\n@ Waterfall Arts\n\nJune 1\, 2 @ 10:00 am - 4:00 pm\n\n$130.00 $180.00\n \n\nHave you ever wondered how frescos are made? Join artist Barbara Sullivan for a hands-on exploration of this age-old medium. During this two-day intensive\, students will develop an understanding and appreciation of true buon fresco (painting into freshly laid wet plaster) within both an art historical context\, as well as in practical applications. Students will learn the many steps involved\, such as how to prepare substrates\, arriccio and intonaco layers of plaster\, how to grind pigments\, and knowing when the plaster is ready to accept paint! All of these techniques will be put into practice as students design and execute their own portable fresco panels. \n\nPlease note this is a 2-day class on Saturday June 1 and Sunday June 2.\n\nAbout the instructor Barbara Sullivan taught at The University of Maine at Farmington for many years. She has been a practicing fresco painter since 1990. Sullivan learned fresco techniques when she was the head cook at The Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. She makes individual shaped frescoes that stand alone\, often she arranges then in scenarios as well as full gallery room installations. Sullivan's work tells stories in keeping with the traditions of the medium\, but not in mural form\, instead her work spins a contemporary ironic twist on this age-old medium. She has taught her fresco workshops at The Aspen Institute\, Aspen CO as part of their Leonardo Davinci Symposium\, at Pratt Institute\, Brooklyn\, NY\, and in Maine at Bowdoin College\, Colby College\, The College of The Atlantic\, The Farnsworth Museum\, and The Haystack Mountain School of Crafts. She is a recipient of both The Esther and Adolph Gottlieb Foundation Grant and The Pollock/Krasner Grant. She has attended many residencies\, including The Vermont Studio Center\, The Virginia Center for The Arts\, The Tyrone Guthrie Center in Ireland\, The Ellis Beauregard Foundation\, Surf Point\, and most recently at Monson Arts. Barbara lives and works in Lincolnville\, ME. She is represented by Caldbeck Gallery in Rockland\, ME\n \n\nWaterfall Arts\n\n256 High Street\n\nBelfast\, MAine 04915
