Left Bank Books in downtown Belfast is thrilled to welcome for the second time Mary Norris, the best-selling New York Times author and renowned New Yorker copyeditor to celebrate the release of her new memoir, Greek to Me: Adventures of the Comma Queen. Norris will give a talk and sign copies of her books on Thursday, July 25 at 7 pm. Norris’s wit, knowledge, and exploration of language permeate Greek to Me, in which she relates her life-long love of Greece, her quest to learn the language and master the mythology, and her travels through the Greek Isles in search of herself. Greek to Me is a brilliant, witty, and moving paean to the art of self-expression, filtered through Norris’s greatest passion: all things Greek. It is a charming account of her lifelong love affair with words and her solo adventures in the land of olive trees and ouzo. She explains how the alphabet originated in Greece, makes the case for Athena as a feminist icon, goes searching for the fabled Baths of Aphrodite, and reveals the surprising ways Greek helped form English. Norris’s legions of fans have this to say about her work: ~ “I fell in love with Mary’s first book, and am now even more in love with this charming, ribald, highly informed, and always funny excursion through the language, culture, and oddities of Greece and the Greek language.” – Steve Martin ~ “Not only is Greek to Me educational, entertaining, and gorgeously written, it shows us how intellectual curiosity coupled with a dash of bravery can pave the way for a more meaningful life.” – Ann Patchett ~ “Mary’s love for all things Greek is palpable and infectious. She is a charming, insightful guide through both ancient and modern glories, and I expect her lush descriptions of the Greek countryside to provoke a tourism stampede.” – Madeline Miller Norris began working at The New Yorker in 1978 and was a query proofreader at the magazine for 24 years. She has written for “The Talk of the Town” and for newyorker.com, on topics ranging from her cousin Dennis Kucinich to mud wrestling in Rockaway. Her first book, Between You & Me: Confessions of a Comma Queen, is a New York Times best-selling book about her years at The New Yorker. Norris last visited Left Bank Books in 2016 and drew a standing-room-only packed house that spilled out onto the street, so early reservations for seats, which are limited, are strongly encouraged -- please email (firstname.lastname@example.org) or call (207-338-9009). Copies of both of Norris’s books will be available for purchase. Left Bank Books is located at 109 Church St. in downtown Belfast, in the historic Opera House building. Ample parking is available on the street and in an adjacent public parking lot.
