Martin Luther King Jr. Day Candlelight Vigil--Jan. 18, 2021, 4:30-5 pm
The 32nd annual Martin Luther King Jr. Candlelight community gathering will be held this year on Monday, January 18, 2021. We will gather at 4:30 pm in Post Office Square, Belfast for a physically distanced candlelight vigil rather than a walk, dedicated to commemoration of past and current struggles for racial justice. Bring candles or flashlights to hold, stand together masked and physically distanced 8-10 feet apart, stretching down both sides of Main Street for an honoring of those killed in the civil rights struggle, and a time to remember all who have lost their lives in the struggle for racial justice. As Dr Cornel West wrote, "Justice is what love looks like in public." Come together for this outdoor ceremony, as the First Church Bells toll for all those we remember, and to honor Dr. King's work and sacrifice for us all.
As there can be no indoor gathering this year due to the pandemic, the Martin Luther King Jr Day Committee will host a Zoom program prior to the vigil at 3 pm on January 18. We will view together a collage of clips of speeches by Dr King himself and comments from people in our community. What would Dr. King be doing if he were alive today? To receive the Link for this Zoom gathering and /or to offer your own comments for inclusion in the program, please email us at <BelfastMLKDay@gmail.com>. The MLK Jr. speeches will be closed captioned.
