Printmaking Workshop: The Whine Line Woodcut

The white line woodcut, also known as the Provincetown Print, is a uniquely American form of printmaking invented by artists working in Provincetown in the early 1900s. In this method, beautiful multi-color prints are made by hand using a single block, eliminating the need for a press or complicated registration methods.

This fun workshop offers the opportunity to learn traditional techniques of design, carving, and printing, as well as the chance to expand upon the tradition with creative inking and printing options, to create contemporary interpretations of the medium. Participants will leave with their own white line prints, and with newfound skills and appreciation of the process.

Some printmaking experience is recommended but not required. All levels welcome!

About the instructor: Kate Hanlon loves sharing her passion for printmaking and for drawing -- the foundation of printmaking -- with students of all abilities. Kate holds a BFA in Printmaking from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and reached Master Printer status while printing editions for artists of national reputation for over 25 years. She has a deep love for woodcut, and has specialized in the white line woodcut technique, also known as the Provincetown Print, for over 30 years. Her woodcut prints are included in the collections of several public institutions as well as in many private collections.
