Art Together Mornings are monthly workshops where families can enjoy quality time together, collaborating and creating side by side. This month, the first Saturday falls on the Mexican holiday, Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead. Two movies, “The Book of Life” and “Coco” brought the holiday to the attention of non-Latinx Americans recently. The colorful skulls and skeletons that go with it can be found among Halloween decorations in stores. But Dia de los Muertos is actually a truly sacred time for Mexican families, with meaningful traditions to help keep departed loved ones close. Together, we’ll learn all about the holiday, the amazing art and crafts that go along with it, and a new perspective on death that isn’t spooky at all! We will make our own versions of altars to loved ones, with paper flowers, papel picado, and (salt-dough) sugar skulls. Bring a photo of someone (it can be a pet!) who passed away, or you may draw one at the workshop. One ticket grants admission for the entire family! Families of Latinx heritage should attend as our guests – just let us know you’re coming so we can prepare calaveras for you to decorate! Email bridget@waterfallarts.org Advanced registration is required to guarantee your place in this fun workshop – register early to reserve your spot and allow our instructor ample time to prepare.
