Espaliered hydrangeas, meandering paths through a terraced hillside, and unique plantings that thoughtfully address color and texture will surprise visitors to the Belfast Garden Club’s Open Garden Days event on Saturday, June 19 at 71 Bayview Street in Belfast. The rain or shine tour takes place between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Admission is $5.00. Law and Kathy Fotterall, who have owned the ocean-view property for 12 years, expanded the existing garden to surround the house on all sides. Different exposures require “hard work and dedication,” according to Law, who adds that the garden is constantly evolving. Herbs fill the front walled garden, and in July, a towering Stewartia tree dominates the landscape. The Belfast Garden Club’s Open Garden Days raise funds used in the non-profit’s educational and community programs, including the planting and maintenance of 13 public gardens in downtown Belfast.
