Looking For Bugs in Belfast Trees
On Sunday, April 26 at 1 p.m., entomologist Gabriel LeMay will lead a walk in Belfast City Park, focusing on how to spot signs of infestation and insect damage in common trees. The event, sponsored by the Belfast Garden Club and its Tree Working Group, will begin at the gate to the park on Northport Avenue, and is free and open to the public. As a member of the Maine Forest Service, LeMay tracks and studies insects in all corners of the state. He manages multiple state forest monitoring projects, including an exotic woodborer/bark beetle survey and the moth light trapping program. His areas of expertise include plant-insect interactions and integrated pest management. This is the third of a winter/spring series of explorations of Belfast trees. The fourth and final walk, in May, will match migratory birds and their favorite trees.
