But Still I Am One is a small nonprofit whose mission is to empower young adults aged 16 to 21 experiencing homelessness in Waldo County. We do this by providing prepaid Visa cards, giving them the freedom and agency to purchase the essentials they need. We also provide information about other resources available to help them.

As a Volunteer Grant Writer, you would be responsible for securing funding for But Still I Am One by researching grant opportunities and writing compelling proposals aligned with funders' priorities. You would manage the entire grant application lifecycle, from initial research to post-award reporting.

Key Responsibilities
  • Prospect Research: Conduct thorough research to identify potential grant opportunities from private foundations and corporations that match the mission and programs of But Still I Am One.
  • Proposal Development: Draft, edit, and tailor persuasive grant proposals, letters of inquiry, and supporting documents to specific funder guidelines. This includes gathering information on the project's nature, objectives, timelines, and evaluation plans for internal departments.
  • Budget Collaboration: Work with the Treasurer to develop accurate, detailed project budgets and provide supporting financial justifications.
  • Deadline Management: Maintain a detailed grants calendar to track submission deadlines, reporting requirements, and other critical milestones, ensuring all materials are submitted on time.
  • Relationship Management: Build and maintain positive relationships with grant providers and internal stakeholders, serving as a liaison for grant-related communication.
  • Reporting and Compliance: Oversee grant implementations, monitor expenditures, and prepare and submit all required progress reports, ensuring compliance with grant conditions and regulations.
  • Strategic Planning: Contribute to the organization's overall fundraising strategy and identify new funding sources to ensure long-term financial sustainability. 
Required Skills and Qualifications
  • Education: Typically a Bachelor's Degree in English, Communications, Journalism, Public Administration, or a related field.
  • Experience: a minimum of two years of proven experience in grant writing, preferably within the nonprofit sector.
  • Writing and Research Skills: Exceptional persuasive writing, editing, and research skills with the ability to translate complex information into clear, compelling narratives. 
  • Organizational Skills: Strong attention to detail, time management, and the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously.
  • Technical Proficiency: Experience with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Soft Skills: A collaborative mindset, strong interpersonal communication skills, and a passion for But Still I Am One's mission.
