About Us

Down East is an identity magazine for Mainers and for anyone whose heart and soul are fed by our state and state of mind. Since 1954, our mission has been simple: to hold a mirror up to Maine, showcasing its landscapes, traditions, droll and flinty character, and unhurried way of life, as well as to confront its complexities intelligently and with heart. Our readers and online communities come to us to learn about out-of-the-way lobster shacks, Maine-made gift ideas, and new places to paddle, hike, and explore, but also for insight into the personalities and issues shaping our state. Simply put — as generations of readers can attest — reading Down East makes you better at loving Maine.

Down East Enterprise, Inc., is a multimedia company based in midcoast Maine. The company’s flagship publication, Down East: The Magazine of Maine, is the largest paid-circulation magazine dedicated to the Pine Tree State. The magazine has a national readership and is read by nearly 400,000 people each month, reaching hundreds of thousands more via its website and social channels.

Down East Enterprise also publishes Shooting Sportsman, the world’s largest magazine dedicated to wingshooting and fine guns, and Maine Homes by Down East, along with websites and video programming via the Down East Channel.

The Down East editorial offices, together with our Down East retail shop, are located in a former summer estate known as Roxmont. Look for our distinctive gray-shingled building on Route 1 in Rockport, Maine.
